It’s been a long time since August 5 of last summer, and I’ve done a lot of work on the garden that I’ll be showing in posts to come.
But this is the first post of the year – I’ve had a few radishes and strawberries and some mustard greens, but this is the first photo-worthy pick of the year.
Twelve turnips, which will roast up nicely and make a good batch of greens.
Summer, here we come. Looking forward to getting back in the habit of daily posts.
One big sandwich-ready Brandywine today, plus three lemon cucumbers, a butternut squash, three okra, and another seventeen small tomatoes.
Also, after that, a couple of pictures of our Goliath sunflower that finally opened up!
I’m embarrassed to say I missed a post yesterday, but it was more of the same: cherry tomatoes, a big Brandywine, several lemon cucumbers, and some okra.
And today…more of the same! Thirty small tomatoes, one Brandywine (not pictured), and two okra, and three lemon cucumbers.
The lemon cucumbers just keep coming…eleven more today, plus 23 small tomatoes, 5 okra, and the first banana pepper of the season (might be the only one, as it looks right now).
Back to relative harvest poverty after yesterday’s mega-pick.
Just one okra, along with 22 small tomatoes, one pumpkin, and a nice black diamond watermelon, first of the summer. At the moment it looks like I’ll get at least three or four more watermelons, which I’m really looking forward to.
You know the real secret to growing lemon cucumbers?
Go on vacation for six days and let them work.
Totals for a six-day period where I didn’t pick anything: 86 small tomatoes, 2 large tomatoes, 14 okra, 36 (!) lemon cucumbers, 5 green cucumbers, 1 pumpkin, and 1 yellow squash.
That makes a season total of 104 lemon cucumbers, 99 of which have come from one vine. Wow.
Three big ugly Brandywine tomatoes today, plus three more lemon cucumbers, two okra, six yellow tomatoes, and nine butternut squash that will need to sit and cure in the sun for a few days. Nice!
It’s been one whole month since I started this site, and I’m glad to say I’ve posted at least once (and had something to harvest) every day so far.
I think I have to acknowledge that green cucumbers might be done for this summer, but the lemon cucumbers seem to be going on strong (65 so far, 63 from one vine).
Also picked today: four okra, eight small tomatoes, and two more early pumpkins that needed to come off a dying vine.
The cucumbers calmed down for a minute. Today’s pick includes one of each variety, plus ten small tomatoes, two okra, and four smallish onions.
Thankfully we’ll get a few days to catch up on cucumbers and make pickles!
Solid day for variety: six lemon cucumbers, three green ones, a radish, fifteen small tomatoes, two large Brandywines (which look ripe from the top but are a nice rich pink all around the sides), and one okra.
